In 2004, a groundbreaking study compared use of cough syrups containing either dextromethorphan or diphenhydramine with a placebo syrup containing neither of these. The study determined that the placebo, which was essentially just flavoured water, reduced coughing better than the two syrups which contained the chemicals. If flavoured water works so well, perhaps water alone would work even better.

Sugar, the one ingredient common to all cough syrups, greatly reduces immunity. On the other hand, in moderate amounts, sweet vegetables and fruits contain nutrients which can boost immunity. So do all unprocessed foods (ie foods which have not been tampered with by man). However, in times of stress and exposure to infections, even for those who follow healthy lifestyle practices, it may be wise to bolster immunity by using supplements, herbs and immune-stimulating therapies.
